Father’s Day Themed Books for Speech and Language Development!

By AASLMay 17, 2022

Father’s Day is right around the corner! Our Speech-Language Pathology team has selected some of their favorite books for this time of year. These sweet books celebrate all the reasons we love our dads. They also have great opportunities for incorporating speech & language goals into story time!

I Love My Daddy by David Bedford

This book is about a little squirrel and his dad playing. But Little Squirrel keeps getting stuck. Luckily, he has his dad close by to save the day. When Little Squirrel gets discouraged, he learns that he can do anything by saving his dad. We all get stuck sometimes! This book is great for your little to label actions (digging, jumping, climbing), sequence events from a story, identify problems, and practice using self-talk (i.e. “I can get out of here, I can do it” etc.). You can tie in big/little identification as well.

Because I’m Your Dad by Ahmet Zappa

This adorable story follows a father-son duo as Dad describes all the things, he tells his son he will do “because I’m your dad.” From teaching his son how to burp to making him feel safe, this dad knows just what to do.  This story exposes your child to using the conjunction “because.” Try having your child fill in other sentences with this same construct. Because it is raining, we need _____. Because my hands are dirty, I should ____. This book is also great for labeling actions, common nouns, and even descriptive words. Get creative after reading the book with your child and help them make their own book of what they can do/what they have learned because of their dad.

Your Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada by Jimmy Fallon

This book makes a great gift for new dads! It is great for early developing consonant sounds and the repetitive CVCV syllable shape “dada” on every page. Each page introduces a different father & baby animal with the dad hoping the baby will say “dada,” but the baby responds with its sound until the very end. Use this book to expose your child to animal sounds and labels and again pointing to big/small.

How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney

This classic book couldn’t be any sweeter. Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare go back and forth in trying to explain how much they love one another. From hops to handstands, Little Nutbrown Hare finally falls asleep as he tells his dad he loves him all the way to the moon. This book is great for again describing/labeling sizes, actions, and body parts. Comparatives (longer, higher, taller, wider, etc.) can also be incorporated as you read this book to your little. Have them point out who has longer ears, who is reaching higher, and which hare is taller.

We hope you all have a wonderful Father’s Day!
