Top Travel Tops for Kids with Sensory Needs

We all know that traveling with our kiddos can be overwhelming for both parents and kids. Add sensory sensitivities to the mix, and it can feel almost impossible to achieve. But a little prep goes a long way!

Whether you’re road-tripping or flying this summer, here are some simple tips to make things smoother:

  • Create a visual schedule – Use pictures or icons to show what to expect during the trip. Include real photos of where you are going, airports you may be in, inside of airplanes, car rides, etc.

  • Pack a “sensory kit” – Think fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, chewy necklaces, or a favorite blanket. Bonus tip is to get some new preferred items and toys to surprise your child for your trip.

  • Choose comfy clothes – No tags. No scratchy seams. Dress for comfort!

  • Build in breaks – If you can, stop and let them move their bodies or have some quiet time.

  • Snacks, snacks, snacks – Familiar foods can help regulate and give your child a sense of control during these transitions.

It’s not about making the trip perfect—it’s about planning for calm moments where you can. You’ve got this! If you need more sensory support, please feel free to reach out to our offices at 813-616-4004 or info@aaspeech.com
