Why Reading With Your Child Matters: Simple Ways to Build Language Through Books

National Literacy Month is a great time to celebrate books, reading, and the many skills children develop on their journey to becoming confident readers. Learning to read does not begin when a child opens a book independently. The foundation for reading develops much earlier through listening, talking, playing with sounds, learning new words, telling stories, and understanding how sounds and letters work together. At All About Speech & Language (AASL), we see speech, language, reading, spelling, and writing as closely connected. Supporting these skills early can help children build a stronger foundation for learning throughout their school years.
